Institutional Arrangements for WEF – Kenya

Kenya, like many countries in Africa, is facing increasing pressure on natural resources in order to meet growing demands for water, energy and food – challenges exacerbated by climate change. The Climate Development and Knowledge Network (CDKN) approached us to look at the opportunities for improved, gender-mainstreamed integration in planning and implementation across these three sectors (the so-called WEF Nexus) in order to provide more sustainable use of limited natural resources in the face of climate change.

Our approach began with the development of a literature and context review. Based on this, we conducted primary research in three counties in Kenya, including a Participatory Impact Pathways Assessment and semi-structured interviews with key informants in government. The results of these processes were tested in the three counties though one Policy Dialogue in each county. We developed a set of recommendations and translated these into policy briefs in order to inform improved and gender-mainstreamed integrated WEF planning and implementation.
